A Detailed Analysis of Board Company Sales Over Six Years

by Rob Meronek on Sunday, March 08, 2009
This listing shows the top selling board companies over the last six years and their percentage changes in sales each year. The data is from the Skatepark of Tampa point of sale system that I wrote back in 2001. My notes are below each company. The list is sorted in order of the top selling brands for the six year period. Only board companies that sold at least 100 decks in this time are included. The data only includes boards sold in the Shop, not on the website.

Baker 2008: -53.9% 2007: 8% 2006: -17.4% 2005: -27% 2004: 65.9%
There was a huge increase in sales from 2003 to 2004, but things have been on the slow decline for Baker ever since. Despite that, they're still the top selling company for the six year period here. 2008 sales were only half of what they were in 2007. They are currently the 6th best selling board company in 2008, down from number 2 in 2007. Maybe Andrew should frontside flip some more stuff.
Zero 2008: -53.2% 2007: -26.3% 2006: -33.9% 2005: 28.6% 2004: 7.9%
Zero's top year was back in 2005. A steady decline has lead to only 80 boards sold through the whole year of 2008.
Flip 2008: 6.8% 2007: -46.3% 2006: -37.3% 2005: -41.7% 2004: 47%
Flip's top year was 2004 when their sales increased nearly 50% from the year prior. Since then, things have dropped significantly and they sold less boards than Zero in 2008. Hurry up with Extremely Sorry.
Element 2008: -16.2% 2007: -33.1% 2006: -16.4% 2005: -48.2% 2004: 24.8%
There has been a 75% drop in sales of Element boards since their best year with us in 2004 when they were the 4th best selling board company. They are currently the 15th best selling board company.
Zoo York 2008: -43.4% 2007: -42.2% 2006: -33.4% 2005: 311.5% 2004: 0%
From 2004 to 2005, sales of Zoo York boards quadrupled in the Shop. That mostly can be attributed to one thing: Robbie Kirkland worked the shop and got flowed from Zoo. He was constantly pushing Zoo boards. Companies, take that as a HUGE HINT to help sell your stuff. In early 2006 when Robbie joined the FSEC (Former SPoT Employee Club), Zoo York boards went on a steady decline and never recovered.
DGK 2008: -29.6% 2007: 4.8% 2006: 10% 2005: -4% 2004: 84.4%
DGK has remained strong since being added to the Shop in 2003 with their only significant decline happening in 2008.
Girl 2008: 38% 2007: 25.7% 2006: -15% 2005: -26.1% 2004: 40.6%
Girl has always been strong. In 2008, they are the top selling board company. In 2007, they were the 8th best selling board company.
Habitat 2008: -39.2% 2007: 72.1% 2006: -25.2% 2005: -29% 2004: -9.5%
Habitat went on a steady decline from 2003 to 2006, but the realease of the Habitat video helped a lot in 2007, almost doubling their sales. In 2008, their volume returned to levels far prior to 2003 to 2006.
Alien Workshop 2008: -29.3% 2007: 100% 2006: 64.3% 2005: -66.1% 2004: 38.7%
2006 started the turnaround of a steady decline in Alien Workshop boards. In 2008, they're the 6th best selling deck company.
Anti-Hero 2008: -18.8% 2007: 28.7% 2006: -19.4% 2005: -15.6% 2004: -15.8%
Anti-Hero has remained fairly steady over the years. In 2008, they're the 10th best selling board company.
Black Label 2008: -12.8% 2007: 66.7% 2006: -1.3% 2005: -15.6% 2004: -23.7%
Black Label has also been steady and hovering around the 10th best board company over the years.
Mystery 2008: -38.2% 2007: -17.1% 2006: -33.9% 2005: 21.6% 2004: 7550%
Mystery sales have been on a steady decline since their peak in 2005.
Krooked 2008: 32.5% 2007: 17% 2006: 22% 2005: 127.8% 2004: -43.8%
Krooked boards have gone from selling only 36 decks in 2004 to the 3rd best selling deck company in the Shop. Brandon Bristol has a Krooked tat. He worked the shop for the last couple years. See the connection? I'll say it again. Companies, take that as a HUGE HINT to help sell your stuff. Flow our employees that work in the Shop and it will have a direct affect on your sales. Too bad Bristol is now in the FSEC. We'll see what effect that has on Krooked board sales in 2009.
Chocolate 2008: 17.5% 2007: 45.1% 2006: -31.7% 2005: -1% 2004: 110%
Chocolate boards have always been steady and in the top 10 board companies.
Foundation 2008: -5.4% 2007: 132.5% 2006: -50% 2005: -7% 2004: 17.8%
Foundation has been steady at around the 15th best selling board company, but in 2006 for some reason, they had a significant decline in sales that returned to normal levels in 2007.
Real 2008: 3.1% 2007: -43% 2006: 12.9% 2005: 98% 2004: -20.3%
Real boards have consistently been around the top 10 each year, but have not recovered from a significant decrease in 2007.
Almost 2008: -28.2% 2007: 6.8% 2006: -25.9% 2005: 93.1% 2004: 500%
Almost boards have consistently been around the top 10 each year.
Toy Machine 2008: -7.4% 2007: -1.1% 2006: 90% 2005: 11.1% 2004: -32.8%
Over the last few years, Toy Machine boards have been steady.
Plan B 2008: 84.5% 2007: -33.9% 2006: 30.9% 2005: 0% 2004: 0%
Plan B's sales have increased 60% since they first returned to the scene in 2005. They are now the 3rd best selling board company in 2008.
enjoi 2008: 14% 2007: -38.7% 2006: 138.5% 2005: -7.1% 2004: -44.7%
Things picked up for enjoi when the video came out a few years ago, but they've always been hovering at the bottom end of the top 20 board companies.
Blind 2008: -13.6% 2007: -27.9% 2006: 10.9% 2005: 25% 2004: -20%
Getting down this far on the list means that smaller changes in quantity equate to huge percentage amounts, so the percentage data doesn't mean as much.
Powell 2008: -11.1% 2007: -33.7% 2006: 18.8% 2005: 90.5% 2004: 2000%
Powell has had its ups and downs, but overall quantities remain low which makes some of the percentage changes look huge.
Popwar 2008: -100% 2007: -74.5% 2006: -12.1% 2005: -56.4% 2004: 51.1%
Popwar went out of business.
Darkstar 2008: -41% 2007: -13.3% 2006: 200% 2005: -48.3% 2004: -48.2%
Darkstar has held a steady place around the 20th best selling board company over the years.
Expedition One 2008: -33.3% 2007: 123.3% 2006: 95.5% 2005: 175% 2004: 0%
Expedition had a strong run from 2004 to 2007 but then fell off with a lot of others in 2008.
Consolidated 2008: -31.6% 2007: -44.1% 2006: 54.5% 2005: -50% 2004: -26.7%
When Consolidated says Don't Do It, people assume it means buying Consolidated decks. Less than one per month sold in 2008.
Organika 2008: -46.9% 2007: -10.9% 2006: 71.9% 2005: -47.5% 2004: 0%
Organika's best year was 2006 and has been declining since.
Lib Tech 2008: 0% 2007: -100% 2006: -43.3% 2005: -54.5% 2004: 34.7%
Lib Tech went away in 2006. Good riddance.
Birdhouse 2008: -16% 2007: 25% 2006: -54.5% 2005: 100% 2004: -24.1%
Birdhouse is averaging around two boards a month each year.
Stereo 2008: 44% 2007: -40.5% 2006: 82.6% 2005: -62.9% 2004: 1450%
In 2003, only 4 Stereo boards sold, then it went to 62 in 2004 which explains the huge percentage number for the 2004 change.
